After a long and dearly missed absence, the rivalry game between the Texas A&M Aggies and Texas Longhorns is finally back.

Having not been played since 2011, the Lone Star Showdown was always one of the most anticipated days of the year on the college football calendar and especially in the state of Texas. With the Longhorns arriving to the SEC in 2024, only 12 years behind the Aggies, the two old foes will face off at Kyle Field this season.

But with the changing times in college football, further conference re-alignment uncertainty, yearly debate on the schedule, and every other issue, the long-term outlook of the game may be in question in the future. During a Lone Star Showdown press conference with representatives from both schools included, Aggies Athletics Director Trev Alberts told media that no matter what happens with the sport, he has a very clear stance on how often it should be played .

"I want it played every year," Alberts said . "I think it's important to Texas, to high school, all of it...it needs to be played every year. Now there's some nuance to that. How many conference games are we gonna play in the SEC? How does it impact the College Football Playoff? When you start getting into different scheduling models, many of us have more than one 'traditional rivalry.' What you don't wanna do is get to the point where you're asking Texas to say 'who do you want your rival to be? Oklahoma or Texas A&M?' I'm hopeful we can get there, but I want this game played every year."

For now, the game is back on a yearly basis. And by the sounds of it, the powers that be want to keep it that way.
