Georgia Tech Coach Brent Key Shares Perfect 7-Word Reaction to Upsetting Florida State

The opening game of the 2024-25 season has concluded and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets pulled off a 24-21 upset over No. 10 ranked Florida State Seminoles. It was a highly contested game throughout, but head coach Brent Key pushed the Yellow Jackets to a big win in Week Zero.

Key was given a postgame interview by ESPN's Katie George immediately after Georgia Tech nailed the game-winning field goal. The Yellow Jackets head coach was asked about how proud he was of the offensive line considering his team bullied the Seminoles in the trenches. Key used seven words that perfectly summed up Georgia Tech's efforts on Saturday.

"Are you kidding me? Run the ball."

The Yellow Jackets largely controlled the clock thanks to their consistent rushing attack. Georgia Tech finished the contest with 190 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground against Florida State.

Running back Jamal Haynes led the way with 75 yards (6.8 per carry) and two touchdowns. Haynes King (54 yards), Chad Alexander (41 yards), Eric Singleton (10 yards), Malik Rutherford (nine yards), and Zach Pyron (one yard and one touchdown) all helped contribute to Georgia Tech's impressive run game.

They Yellow Jackets have been known as a tough running team for years. But they looked much better with Key as head coach. Georgia Tech seems to have a better idea of what kind of football team they are, which wasn't the case when Geoff Collins (North Carolina defensive coordinator) was head coach.

Based on what we saw on Saturday we should expect the Yellow Jackets to be a run-first team. Combine that with what looked like a solid defense and you have yourself a Georgia Tech team that could end up having a surprising year.

Key first took over as head coach in 2022 after stepping in as the interim coach after Collins' firing. Georgia Tech decided to officially name Key the head coach ahead of the 2023 season. The Yellow Jackets finished with a 7-6 record and beat UCF in the Gasparilla Bowl 30-17.

The next three games for Key and the Yellow Jackets are favorable for this program. They face off against Georgia State, Syracuse, and VMI in their next three contests. Week 4 could be a big-time matchup for Georgia Tech, as they take on the Louisville Cardinals on September 21.

That's a matchup that we might need to mark on the calendar. Especially if both Georgia Tech and Louisville can remain undefeated ahead of that game.
