Giants vs. Jets: Injuries Spoil Preseason Finale

The New York Giants and New York Jets faced off in the Snoopy Bowl on Saturday, fighting for bragging rights in the preseason finale. The Giants fell short, losing 10-6 to their cross-stadium rivals.

New York made an effort to leave Saturday healthy. Center John Michael Schmitz was the only notable starter on either side of the ball (sans punter Jamie Gillan), and even notable depth at running back and edge rusher stayed off the field.

But they wouldn’t leave without their handful of injury scares.

Schmitz got rolled up on, tackle Evan Neal left with an ankle injury, defensive lineman Timmy Horne was carted off with an Achilles ailment of some sort. Offensive lineman Jalen Mayfield was also carted off. They were joined by corner Mario Goodrich (hamstring) and linebacker Ovie Oghoufo (hamstring). In the fourth quarter, corner Darnay Holmes also needed assistance from the training staff.

On the field, things didn’t look much better early on. The game began with a fumble on the Giants’ opening return and the story of the first half was quarterback Tommy DeVito and the constant duress he found himself under.

New York’s offensive line struggled mightily, and DeVito was sacked four times in the first two quarters.

After entering the half down 10-3, the next score would come in the fourth quarter, by virtue of a Jude McAtamney field goal to cut the Jets’ lead from seven points to four.

Unlike the preseason opener against the Detroit Lions, the ground game wasn’t able to get going, and neither Allen Robinson nor Isaiah Hodgins separated themselves through the air.

The fourth quarter remained mostly quiet, and the Giants had a chance to take the lead late. Instead, the pressure to continue to mount, New York was forced to punt. On the ensuing drive, kicker Greg Zuerlein would miss his second field goal of the game.

For the second time, the Giants would have the chance to take the lead in the game's final moments. After using his legs to cross midfield, he would take a fourth-and-two snap for a quarterback draw -- and come up short.

The Giants' preseason would end quietly.
