McCarthy Reveals Surprising Trey Lance NFL Prediction

The Dallas Cowboys wrapped up their preseason on Saturday with a 26-19 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at AT&T Stadium.

Quarterback Trey Lance played the entire game for the Cowboys, going 33-of-49 for 323 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 90 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown sprint.

Unfortunately for Lance, and the Cowboys, he also threw five interceptions, one in the end zone, as Dallas was driving to score.

"Ups and downs for sure. I turned the ball over too many times," Lance said. "My confidence isn't going anywhere. This sucks. This is one I'm not going to forget about any time soon, but it's part of it. You just got to flush it and turn the page."

One of those five interceptions was returned for a touchdown, which was the final margin at the end of the game. Despite his struggles, Lance had an opportunity to tie the game with less than two minutes remaining.

He led the Cowboys to the edge of the red zone with seven seconds left. The Cowboys had the right play called, and an open receiver, but Lance missed him and the game ended on an interception in the end zone.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke after the game about Lance and his performance in this game.

“I saw some good, and I saw some things you’d like to have back,” Jerry said. “I hate that those five interceptions are going to be a stat on a game that I couldn’t have asked for more reps and a better situation to watch him play.

“He needed that because the one thing he’s missing more than anything is the lack of reps much less NFL reps. ... Certainly, we’re planning on him being on our roster for sure.”

That's no surprise. But coach Mike McCarthy's review might be, to some.

"He continually gets better every time you give him a chance,'' McCarthy said. "I think that says a lot about him. He's just a young guy that needs to play. I think he'll play in this league for a long time."

The Cowboys gave up a fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers for Lance just before the season began last year. At this point, it sure looks like the 49ers won that trade.

The former No. 3 overall pick is likely going to be the third-string quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush this season.

The Cowboys open the regular season on the road against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, Sept. 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:25 p.m. CST in the FOX NFL Game of the Week.
