In the preseason finale at Commanders Field in Greater Landover, Maryland, the Washington Commanders found themselves trailing 7-0 late in the first quarter against the New England Patriots . The Patriots capitalized on a strong drive led by rookie quarterback Drake Maye , who stepped in after veteran Jacoby Brissett left the game with an injury.

Maye’s introduction to the game was marked by early challenges, fumbling on his first snap, but the young quarterback quickly regained his composure. On the very next series, Maye led the Patriots on a methodical 50-yard drive in just five plays, highlighted by a 29-yard pass to wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk and a 17-yard scramble that put the Patriots in scoring position. Despite fumbling again at the Commanders' 41-yard line, Maye recovered his own mistake and continued to drive the offense forward.

The Commanders’ defense appeared to have a chance to stop the Patriots’ momentum, but a crucial 5-yard penalty on defensive lineman Haggai Chisom Nduisi for encroachment gave the Patriots an automatic first down. Seizing the opportunity, Maye connected with running back Kevin Harris on an 18-yard touchdown pass , capping off an 11-play, 83-yard drive that gave New England the lead with just 40 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
