Cris Collinsworth Makes His Opinion Of Patriots Rookie QB Drake Maye Extremely Clear

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye earned a new fan in Chris Collinsworth in his team's preseason finale.

The No. 3 overall pick in this year's NFL Draft flashed his potential in the preseason, completing 21-of-34 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown. He also turned in an unusual play in the preseason finale against the Washington Commanders.

Early in the second quarter, after he entered the game in relief of veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, Maye got his foot tangled with an offensive lineman after taking the snap and had his shoe fly off into the backfield. Wearing one shoe, the rookie quarterback was able to stay in the pocket and find running back JaMychal Hasty for a 14-yard gain.

While the play may have been routine outside of Maye's shoe troubles, Collinsworth acted rather impressed.

"How good is this guy? This guy is a living legend already, Mike!" Collinsworth said to broadcast partner Mike Tirico.

Tirico did not seem as amused with the apparent tongue-in-cheek praise for Maye.

"Stop it," Tirico responded.

Collinsworth may not have another chance to praise Maye for a while. After finishing 4-13 last season, the Patriots earned just one primetime game on the schedule for 2024, a Thursday Night Football game against the New York Jets in Week 3.
