In the third quarter of their preseason finale against the New England Patriots at Commanders Field in Greater Landover, Maryland, the Washington Commanders finally got on the board, narrowing the score to 7-3 with a 34-yard field goal by recently acquired kicker Cade York .

The field goal came after a determined 15-play, 54-yard drive led by quarterback Trace McSorley, who attempted to help shift momentum for the Commanders as they battled to close the gap.

The drive began with the Commanders receiving the ball to start the second half, and McSorley immediately faced pressure, nearly throwing an interception on his first pass attempt. However, the quarterback quickly settled in, showing resilience and athleticism.

On a crucial 3rd-and-10 from their 31-yard line, McSorley scrambled for 11 yards, earning a first down and keeping the drive alive. He continued to use his legs effectively, picking up another 10 yards on a 3rd-and-5 to push the Commanders into Patriots territory.

McSorley then connected with running back Chris Rodriguez on a 15-yard pass, bringing the ball to the Patriots’ 17-yard line. Despite this progress, the Commanders’ offense stalled at the 13-yard line, unable to capitalize on the red zone opportunity. This set up Cade York, who was recently traded to Washington from the Cleveland Browns for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2025. York stepped up and nailed a 34-yard field goal, cutting the Patriots' lead to 7-3 with 10:37 left in the third quarter.

The field goal marked the Commanders’ first points of the night, injecting some life into their offense as they looked to build on this momentum and possibly take the lead as the game progressed.
