Longtime NFL announcer Cris Collinsworthis watching the Washington Commanders vs. the New England Patriots game on Sunday evening. ... and he's seen enough.

He's ready to announce who is about to emerge as the NFL's next "superstar.''

The Commanders and the Patriots are finishing up their - and the league's - preseason schedules. In the case of Washington? They know who their QB is going to be as coach Dan Quinn has already announced that LSU product and No. 2 overall pick in the recent NFL Draft Jayden Daniels will be the team's first-team quarterback.

And Collinsworth has himself a vision ... that Washington fans hope is absolutely right.

“It doesn’t hurt if you bring in the Heisman Trophy winner, right?,'' Collinsworth said on the national TV broadcast. "Jayden Daniels has simply dazzled since he has gotten to Washington ... I think he is going to be a superstar in this league.”

Daniels has looked like the real deal in training camp and in the preseason, from the way he's performed to the way he's conducted himself. ... all of it so impressive that really, the Quinn announcement was essentially a formality.

There will be growing pains, of course. There are good arguments about just what a rookie QB can be expected to accomplish. But this much is for certain: Washington, which is scheduled to open the 2024 season on Sunday, Sept. 8 against Tampa Bay, isn't wasting any time on its way to finding out.
