This past week, Deion Sanders randomly took to social media to ask a bank in Boulder or Denver to step forward and form a "business relationship" with members of the Colorado Buffaloes football team.
While he didn't provide context for what the partnership could entail at the time, we learned about it via social media on Sunday, August 25. Despite being mocked for the inquiry, Sanders' efforts were for a great cause.
Elevations Credit Union stepped forward and, through their partnership, opened up bank accounts for the children of players on the team. On top of that, each of the accounts that are meant to help the future generation will start with $2,121. Sanders told the fathers on the team in front of the rest of the team while also emphasizing how great of an opportunity it is to be a father.
"Want y'all to know ain't like you're in trouble," Sanders said after calling up the players who are fathers to the front of the room. "You ain't done nothing wrong. Matter of fact you did something right and a child is not a mistake. A child is an opportunity to mature you, grow you, advance you, and give you some skills...
"So y'all know how I am about fathering," Sanders said. "And you know I would not hire a coach unless he's a great father. I don't hire a coach as a deadbeat. I don't hire coaches not taking care of his responsibilities. I would never hire a man that he say he's gonna look after y'all but he won't look after his. That don't make sense to me. We was blessed. I mean truly blessed and this is unbelievable...5430 Alliance they have something to tell you that we've been working on."
Following Sanders' speech about fatherhood and hinting at why he posted the message earlier in the week, a representative of the credit union revealed the big surprise.
"Coach Prime put out that call, and Elevations Credit Union responded," said the representative. "Coach Prime asked us to step up and to join him today and get in opening up accounts for the children of some of the student athletes that he just appreciates so much.
"Today we're starting you all out with $2,121," said the rep.
Quite the surprise for the young athletes who are balancing football, school and parenthood. While Sanders has been under fire recently due to some media squabbles, this is certainly one of the best ways that NIL can be used.
Sanders and his squad will open their season on Thursday, August 29, against North Dakota State on ESPN.
