The Washington Commanders seized control in the fourth quarter of their preseason finale against the New England Patriots , turning a tight game into a commanding 20-10 lead and eventually the win. The surge began with a 6-play, 45-yard drive led by quarterback Trace McSorley , who orchestrated the team’s first lead of the night. Running back Michael Wiley capped the drive with a 9-yard touchdown run, putting the Commanders ahead 13-10 with 9:29 remaining.

The Patriots responded with a promising 9-play, 59-yard drive that brought them to the Commanders' 15-yard line. However, their momentum stalled on a crucial fourth-and-four, where quarterback Joe Milton's scramble fell short, gaining only one yard and turning the ball over on downs.

With just over six minutes left in the game, the Commanders took over at their own 14-yard line. Wide receiver Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint made a highlight-reel catch, leaping over a Patriots defender for a 22-yard gain that brought the Commanders to their own 49-yard line. The drive continued with the help of two significant defensive pass interference penalties against the Patriots, each for 19 yards, which advanced the Commanders deep into New England territory.

Capitalizing on the opportunities, McSorley connected with receiver Martavis Bryant for a short touchdown pass, extending the Commanders’ lead to 20-10 with 3:10 left in the fourth quarter. This strong finish by Washington demonstrated their ability to close out games effectively, a promising sign as they look ahead to the regular season.
