Steelers Begin Final Roster Cuts with 8 Players

The Pittsburgh Steelers closed out the preseason portion of their schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 24-17 loss to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

While the score is meaningless, the game wasn't. All three preseason contests allowed coach Mike Tomlin and his staff to evaluate not just the battle for the starting quarterback, but every roster position and player hoping to make the team.

On Monday, Pittsburgh began the process of cutting down the offseason total to 53, which the club has to do by Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.

Both sides of the ball were affected on Monday. On the offense, linemen Tyler Beach and Devery Hamilton, wide receivers Jacob Copeland and T.J. Luther, and running back Daijun Edwards were all cut.

On defense, lineman Marquiss Spencer, linebacker Kyahva Tezino, and defensive back Kiondre Thomas were all released.

The Steelers will continue to evaluate and make decisions on every position and bubble player until the deadline on Tuesday.

As far as the quarterback battle is concerned, Tomlin says he'll make a final decision on who will start under center in Week 1 in Atlanta after this week's practices.

It's largely considered that Russell Wilson will be the starter, but could be on a short leash this season. If he struggles, then Justin Wilson could step in for the remainder of the season.
