As the NFL preseason concludes, the New York Giants are shifting their focus toward the start of the regular season. While roster cuts are underway, reducing the roster from 90 to 53 players, Head coach Brian Daboll has emphasized the importance of refining the team's fundamentals before diving into game-specific preparations.

Speaking on Sunday, Daboll outlined his approach for the coming week, stating that the primary focus remains on the Giants' internal development.

“When you're getting ready to play the start of the season, I think the most important thing is to get your team ready,” Daboll said .

He highlighted the necessity of honing the team's fundamentals rather than diving prematurely into detailed game planning for their Week 1 opponent, the Minnesota Vikings .

Daboll acknowledged that while the coaching staff has conducted preliminary studies on all upcoming opponents, including analyzing tendencies from previous seasons and preseason games, the priority remains on the Giants' own performance.

“We've really been focused on our team and our fundamentals and the things that we can do to improve for us. If you start too early on a team, which we don't do with the players, I think it can get stale,” Daboll explained .

The emphasis on fundamentals comes after a challenging start to the previous season, where the Giants were overpowered by the Dallas Cowboys in a 40-0 loss in Week 1. Daboll hopes that the adjustments made during this year’s training camp, including more rigorous and team-oriented drills, will better prepare the Giants for the season ahead.

In the final days of what is still considered “training camp,” Daboll plans to keep the focus on internal improvements.

“There's certainly things from the start of training camp to now that I'd say the defense needs to correct some things, the offense, the special teams,” Daboll noted .

The team will continue to compete against each other in practice and address specific areas of concern before fully focusing on the Vikings.

With two weeks until the season opener, Daboll reassured that detailed game planning will commence soon but reiterated that the immediate priority is ensuring the Giants are fundamentally sound and ready to compete when the regular season kicks off.
