Despite dropping their preseason finale 20-10 to the Washington Commanders on Sunday night at Commanders Field, it appears that the New England Patriots may have avoided a serious loss at the quarterback position. ... involving an old D.C. pal.

On New England’s first offensive drive, Commanders linebacker K.J. Henry took full advantage of a miscommunication along the opponents’ offensive line to bring down starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett. The Pats’ veteran quarterback appeared to be in a considerable amount of pain, pointing to his right shoulder and wincing as he finished the drive. Head coach Jerod Mayo pulled Brissett out of the game after the conclusion of the drive, on which he completed only 2-of-4 for 19 yards.

While Brissett did not return to the game, Mayo later revealed that his plan called for the former Commanders quarterback to be relieved of his nightly duties after the first series — making way for rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

Though the team has yet to provide an official update on his condition, Mayo expressed his belief that Brissett - a former Washington QB - would have been able to continue playing through the injury, had Sunday’s game been a regular-season matchup. As such, the injury is not expected to be serious.

Last year, it appeared Brissett had won the starting job for Washington’s penultimate game in Week 17 when former coach Ron Rivera announced that he would get the nod against the San Francisco 49ers. However, Brissett injured his hamstring during practice and was later ruled out. He ultimately finished the season having completed 18 of 23 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns.

Accordingly, Brissett, with the Commanders behind him, will hope for good health as he now serves as a potential bridge option for the Pats as they await the proper time to anoint Maye as their franchise quarterback.
