Jeremy Sochan Plays Oddball Role Efficiently

    By Lance Roberson,

Gregg Popovich experimented with San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan. In a short tenure as point guard, Sochan did his best LeBron James impersonation as a 6-foot-8 point forward. Although it didn't work, one stat came last season from an unconventional shooting method. While many don't associate Sochan with offense, his awkward play style places him on a peculiar list.

Sochan made a list inspired by an odd stat . The list includes James Harden, Jimmy Butler, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Damian Lillard, and Tyrese Maxey.

What do those stars all have in common? They all hit difficult shots. One challenging shot is shooting off the wrong foot - Sochan converted 49 percent of his 86 layups and floaters on such shots.

The Spurs forward shot seven percent lower than the league average of true shooting percentage. Sochan has the physical build of a versatile star, but he can't shoot. However, his athletic build and sneaky finishing capability on difficult shots cushion his otherwise shotty shooting production.

With Chris Paul in the lineup, expect an enhancement in Sochan's production. Although Paul will provide Sochan with unseen access to shot attempts, the jump shot and free throw numbers fall on the Dennis Rodman-influenced forward.

Nonetheless, Sochan's adaptability around the rim will help with clean-up shots and finishing over elite defenses.

Sochan averaged 11.6 points, an improved 77 percent from the charity stripe, and an improved 30 percent from behind the 3-point line. To solve the Spurs' problems, Paul will lead the point guard position, allowing Sochan to play off-ball full-time.
