Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick didn’t mince his words when discussing the worst part of being an NFL head coach.

During Monday’s edition of ESPN's "The Pat McAfee Show, " McAfee asked Belichick if he was relieved not to have to cut players this year, to which Belichick responded with a resounding yes.

“That’s the worst part of the job as a head coach in the National Football League,” Belichick said. “That’s one hundred percent the worst part of the job.”

With just over a week until Week 1 kicks off, the deadline for roster cuts is 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 27, when teams must trim down from 90 players to a 53-man roster.

“You have players who come in and have dreams and do everything you asked them to do,” Belichick explained. “You’re firing 37 people.”

Belichick noted that for some of these players, it could be their last chance in the NFL, impacting their lives and their families' lives. It’s a deeply emotional process, which is why he dislikes it so much.

Belichick began his NFL coaching career as an assistant for the Baltimore Colts in 1975. He was often assigned the task of informing players they were being cut, earning the nickname "Bad News Billy."

“I was Bad News Billy,” Belichick shared. “If they saw me coming around, nobody wanted to see me because if I was going to see them, it was bad news.”

While Belichick’s storied career highlights his coaching prowess, this personal insight shows a different side of the historic figure.

It also serves as a reminder that NFL players are human, and being cut is a tough, emotional experience that affects their livelihoods and personal lives.
