The Boston Red Sox finished their abbreviated game against the Toronto Blue Jays and it ended with their fourth straight loss, this time by a score of 4-1.

Nick Pivetta threw the ball well in a bullpen role with a starter warmup, allowing just two earned runs in six innings of work while the Boston offense couldn’t muster any support.

What are the main takeaways from Boston's game one loss to Toronto?

    Nick “Penvetta” showed out

Nick Pivetta, coined “Penvetta” last season for his excellent performances out of the bullpen, was one of the very few bright spots for Boston today. He allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings, with an error by Triston Casas and an immediate double by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. off of Luis Garcia accounting for two of those.

As has been the unfortunate trend recently, the Red Sox offense and pitching staff seemingly can’t figure out how to click at the same time. Pivetta was everything the team could’ve hoped he would be today, but was given virtually zero assistance by anyone else on the roster

    The bats couldn’t break through

The Red Sox lineup couldn’t muster a single hit until Danny Jansen blooped a single into center field in the fifth inning, and outside of an 8th-inning Jarren Duran solo home run down 4-0, the offense was nonexistent.

The frustrations mounted when they came up empty in their one chance to take the lead, with a baserunning interference call and weak groundout ending a 6th inning rally that started with two on and no one out.

    This team needs a spark

With the Kansas City Royals winning the first game of their doubleheader, the Red Sox are now pushed to 5.5 games out of the last Wild Card spot. The Royals’ schedule is becoming much tougher at the same time as the Red Sox’s schedule lightening up, but time to make up ground is running out.

All areas of the Boston roster looks generally lifeless right now, with subpar performances from just about every player plaguing the team’s playoff chances. To save whatever chances of a playoff spot they have left, they’re going to need to make an extraordinarily quick turnaround.

The Red Sox are now 67-63 on the season.

    Game 2

The second game of the Boston Red Sox series against the Toronto Blue Jays is scheduled for tonight at 7:10 PM EST at Fenway Park, televised on NESN.
