How Does Smith-Schuster Fit Into Chiefs Receiver Room?

    By Colin Miller,

The Kansas City Chiefs made a late addition to their receiving corp Monday, signing veteran wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. This signing is a reunion for Smith-Schuster and the Chiefs, as the receiver was with the team for their 2022 Super Bowl run.

While Smith-Schuster is certainly a familiar face with the team, he will be joining a very different-looking wide receiver group than the one he played with just two seasons ago. Led by sophomore Rashee Rice and offseason additions Marquise Brown and rookie Xavier Worthy, Smith-Schuster will likely have a much different role with the team in 2024.

However, while the group will look different, the team certainly still may have a use for the receiver, especially in the opening weeks of the season.

Although the team does have high expectations for newcomers Brown and Worthy, Brown is currently dealing with a shoulder injury that could sideline him for the season opener, and Worthy has never taken an NFL snap before. Bringing in Smith-Schuster gives quarterback Patrick Mahomes a weapon that he is familiar with, which may help the team get through some growing pains with their new receivers in the first few weeks.

While it's unclear if Smith-Schuster will have a massive impact with the Chiefs in 2024, the signing did come just a day before roster cuts need to be finalized, meaning the team is at least expecting him to be on the initial 53-man roster.

Fans can potentially see Smith-Schuster make his on-field return with Kansas City when they take on the Baltimore Ravens in the regular-season opener on Sept. 5.
