Tennis fans were on the edge of their seats as a first-round match at the U.S. Open ventured into the fifth and final set between Yoshihito Nishioka and Miomir Kecmanović. However, that excitement soon turned into concern after a scary scene unfolded near Nishioka’s baseline following the first game of the final frame.

Fans could see the Japanese player clutching his left thigh and his arm before collapsing to the ground. It was initially unclear what caused the pain or how bad it was, but after several minutes, Nishioka was forced to retire from the match. Support for the ailing participant poured in online in the moments following the terrifying incident.

“Very scary hope he’s ok,” Maverick commented.

His opponent took exception to Nishioka’s previous attempts for a medical timeout during the match, but when the injury became more serious Kecmanović stayed with Nishioka to show him some support through this unfortunate injury.
