Houston Texans Release Former Florida Gators Star Cornerback

After being drafted to the Jacksonville Jaguars with the ninth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, former Florida Gators cornerback C.J. Henderson has not panned out to the expectations set for him when he entered the league.

Now, four years later, the Houston Texans announced Tuesday that they are releasing Henderson. NFL teams must all cut down their rosters to 53 by 4 p.m. Tuesday by either waiving, releasing, or assigning their players to a reserve list.

Henderson spent two seasons in Jacksonville before spending the last three years with the Carolina Panthers . His best season came in 2022, when he started in ten games and finished the year with two interceptions, six pass deflections, and one forced fumble.

However, in his five seasons in the league, he only has three interceptions in 49 career games. After signing with the Texans this off-season, the hope was that he was going to find a home and rejuvenate his career with a Super Bowl contender, but the Texans coaches saw otherwise when evaluating their roster.

Now, the 25-year-old will look for a new home across the NFL landscape. It wasn't that long ago when he was one of the most sought-after cornerbacks entering the league after an historic collegiate career at Florida.
