The Los Angeles Lakers' choice to draft Bronny James with their second-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft sparked debate before and after the event. At No. 55 overall, Bronny, who received a four-year, $7.9 million contract, was a rare case for a player at that draft position, typically signing two-way deals.

Critics argue the pick was driven by the connection to LeBron James rather than Bronny's on-court prowess. However, the Lakers have remained steadfast in their support, with various figures from the organization publicly backing their rookie.

    Jeanie Buss Defends the Decision

Lakers owner Jeanie Buss is the latest to voice her support, emphasizing Bronny's strong work ethic and commitment. Speaking on AM 570 LA Sports , Buss stated:

“We have to let the kid have an opportunity to play and prove that he should be in a Laker uniform. Everything that we’ve seen from him and about him and his work ethic, just some of the things he’s had to overcome being the son of a big star. He works hard, he’s dedicated. He really wants to do this. If we can have a roster of players with that mentality, then I think the sky is the limit.”

Lakers guard Austin Reaves also expressed excitement about playing with Bronny, acknowledging the pressure that comes with being LeBron’s son. Reaves told SB Nation’s Nicole Ganglani :

“I also can’t wait to see Bronny grow. Obviously, he gets a bad rap because of who his dad is. Everybody’s going to hold him to the standards of his dad when the kid just wants to play and have fun and create his own path so I can’t wait to get around him and see him grow and ultimately make a career for himself in his own way.”

Bronny's debut in Lakers gear came during the NBA Summer League. After a shaky start—missing all his three-point attempts in the first four games—he turned things around with notable performances in his final two appearances. He managed to score double-digit points in both games, combining for 25 points, showing signs of promise.

Standing 6-foot-2, Bronny entered the NBA after a season at USC, where he faced challenges including a delayed start due to cardiac arrest over the summer. During his one season at USC, he played 25 games with six starts, averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game on 36.6 percent shooting. His performance left some questioning his readiness for the NBA, but the Lakers are clearly hopeful for his growth and potential.

Despite the initial criticism, the Lakers' commitment to Bronny James reflects their belief in his potential and dedication. With the backing of key figures like Jeanie Buss and Austin Reaves, and a promising finish to his Summer League play, Bronny's journey with the Lakers is one to watch closely as he aims to carve out his own path in the league.
