Chiefs Trade With Cowboys For Travis Kelce Backup?

Evidenced by the new mega-contract they gave him this offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs are thrilled with Travis Kelce. But evidenced by Tuesday's roster moves - which includes a trade with the Dallas Cowboys for Peyton Hendershot - they aren't exactly satisfied with the tight ends behind on the depth chart.

The Chiefs are sending a conditional 7th round draft choice in 2026 to Dallas in exchange for Hendershot, who was buried on the Cowboys' depth chart behind burgeoning star Jake Ferguson and was targeted as a likely cut.

The move is an indication that Kansas City thinks it needs help behind Kelce, after the failed free-agent signing of Irv Smith Jr. (who is being cut) and the presence of Noah Gray and Jared Wiley at the position.

Hendershot, 25, joined the Cowboys in 2022 as an undrafted free agent out of Indiana. The 6-foot-4, 254-pounder played in 25 games for Dallas, making 15 catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. He was also a big contributor on special teams, playing 297 in 2022 and 103 last season.
