Encouraging Signs For a New York Mets Prospect

This was supposed to be a big year for Drew Gilbert. New York acquired Gilbert at the trade deadline last year. He immediately became one of the Mets’ most exciting prospects.

Gilbert then excelled at Double-A Binghamton for the remainder of the 2023 season. Gilbert had a .984 OPS in 35 games with the Mets’ minor league affiliate last year. The success confirmed what a lot of people around the Mets system saw in Gilbert when they traded for him.

They saw a player with above average tools who can flat out hit. Gilbert can slug, but he is more of a double threat. He is someone who will not strike out a ton and can hit to all fields.

Hopes were high when Gilbert started the year with Syracuse. Starting in AAA meant that a good year would most likely lead to him being called up later in the year.

But Gilbert only played seven games before he got hurt. A hamstring strain, on April sixth, kept Gilbert from playing a game in Syracuse again until late July.

Gilbert is finally healthy, with a chance to get used to very tough pitching. Gilbert is facing guys that are on the cusp of the majors. It is a big adjustment from AA. Gilbert started AAA slowly then his injury derailed any progress.

It takes time to get used to improved pitching. Gilbert seems to be already moving in the right direction.

The young outfielder has reached base in seven of his last eight games. He has also raised his slugging percentage by .76 points in just five games. That is due to Gilbert’s recent home run surge.

Gilbert has hit three home runs in five games. Some questioned Gilbert’s potential to hit with power because of his height. Gilbert is only 5’9”, but he is very strong and has a solid base. He has the ability to grow into his body and be a power threat.
