The Los Angeles Chargers are looking to turn their fortunes around this season after a series of disappointing finishes. With the hiring of Jim Harbaugh, a coach with a proven track record, the team aims to make a significant leap forward.

To compete for a Super Bowl, the Chargers need to focus on three key areas:

    1. Build a Strong Rushing Game

Last season, the Chargers struggled with their ground game, ranking 25th in the league with an average of 96.6 rushing yards per game. This offseason, they parted ways with Austin Ekeler and brought in Gus Edwards, who previously led the Ravens in rushing touchdowns.

Edwards' physical running style aligns well with Harbaugh's preference for a run-first offense. The Chargers haven't had a 1,000-yard rusher since Melvin Gordon in 2017, so establishing a reliable rushing attack behind a solid offensive line is crucial.

    2. Develop a Top-Tier Defense

When Brandon Staley took over as head coach, there were high expectations for the Chargers' defense, but they consistently fell short. With talent like Derwin James Jr., Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa, and Asante Samuel Jr., the defense should perform better.

Harbaugh has brought in former Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to help revamp the defense. If Minter can improve their performance, it will greatly enhance the Chargers' chances of success.

    3. Maximize Justin Herbert's Potential

Justin Herbert, drafted in 2020, has shown immense talent and potential as the Chargers' franchise quarterback. For the team to make a serious Super Bowl run, Herbert needs to elevate his game.

With strong competition in the AFC, particularly from Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, it’s essential that the Chargers surround Herbert with the right resources and that he steps up as a leader on the field.

By addressing these three areas, the Chargers can position themselves as serious contenders this season.
