Lions final roster cuts: QB Nate Sudfeld loses backup role to Hendon Hooker

The Detroit Lions made the rest of their roster cuts on Tuesday as the team shrunk its roster to 53 players.

The Lions made several roster cuts on Monday, highlighted by wide receivers Donovan Peoples-Jones and Kaden Davis. The team also cut tight end Shane Zylstra.

Nate Sudfeld was released by the team, making Hendon Hooker the backup quarterback to Jared Goff entering the season.

The Lions announced the following roster moves on Tuesday:

Aside from Sudfeld being the most notable transaction on Tuesday, the lions waived tight ends James Mitchell and Sean McKeon. That leaves Detroit with Sam LaPorta, Brock Wright and Parker Hesse as the only tight ends on the roster. Hesse has also been taking reps at fullback.

The Lions open their regular season against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 8 for Sunday Night Football.
