Why Did Jets Send Bills Quality Returner in Brandon Codrington?

Instead of waiting to see where Brandon Codrington would end up when he was eventually put on waivers, the New York Jets tried to get ahead of the situation by sending him to the Buffalo Bills for a sixth-round pick swap.

But of all the teams to add the undrafted free-agent cornerback, why exactly would the Jets be comfortable sending Codrington to an AFC East rival like the Bills?

Especially with the NFL's rule changes on kickoffs.

For Buffalo to potentially acquire a player like Codrington at a time when the need for return specialists has never been higher, is a great move for the AFC East champs.

It's an interesting decision made by the Jets.

A pick swap allows the team at the very least to acquire compensation for a player such as Codrington. Is a sixth-round pick swap worthy of potentially facing off against the returner every two games of the season?

In a division race that is expected to be as tight as ever, the Jets need all the help and advantages they can get.

One of their advantages happened to be on special teams over the last two seasons. That edge could be smaller now that they have given the Bills a chance to improve significantly at the position of returner.
