RGIII Reveals Who'll Be Named Starter In Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a full-on quarterback controversy since the beginning of training camp when Russell Wilson was injured and Justin Fields had the opportunity to step up into the first team.

Neither quarterback really distinguished himself in the preseason, but former ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III believes that Wilson was always going to be the starter. On a recent episode of the Rich Eisen Show, RGIII explained his stance.

“If you start Justin Fields first, and he goes out and plays bad for five games, his career is over as a starter,” RGIII said. “I think Mike Tomlin understood this. Maybe front facing to the media he’ll say, ‘It’s an open competition,’ because you have to, as a head coach.

“He knew all along who he wanted his starting quarterback to be, if indeed it is Russell Wilson, and I don’t think there’s a problem there.”

This almost echoes what former Steelers coach Bill Cowher had to say a few weeks ago on the Pat McAfee Show when he detailed that starting Justin Fields and then benching him would destroy his confidence and ruin his career.

Coach Tomlin says we will know the starter very soon, but with multiple people stating it will be Wilson for very similar reasons, we expect that the veteran Super Bowl winner will be under center Week 1.
