Juju Smith-Schuster Reveals Reasons Behind Chiefs Reunion

    By Adam Schultz,

JuJu Smith-Schuster is back with the Kansas City Chiefs after spending one year with the New England Patriots.

The veteran didn't seem to fit the Patriots' offensive scheme and now returns to where he won the Super Bowl in the 2022 season. It is also worth noting that Smith-Schuster had the second-best season of his career in Kansas City (933 yards) and will look to try and find his spot in Andy Reid's offense.

What were the deciding factors in Smith-Schuster returning to the Chiefs?

“Very familiar with the offense, very familiar with Andy Reid, Pat [Mahomes], the guys, so just me being in this facility makes your job a lot easier than going to somewhere new where you gotta learn everything pretty quickly,” Smith-Schuster said . I think the hardest part for an offensive player is going into a new system and having to study a whole new playbook.”

While the addition of Smith-Schuster is good for Mahomes and the offense, it is tough to figure out exactly where he fits in the pecking order.

Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, Travis Kelce, Marquise Brown, Mecole Hardman, Justin Watson, and Skyy Moore will all be vying for targets.

So, exactly where he fits is unknown, but Smith-Schuster made it known that he isn't about getting a set number of targets or receptions, more so just trying to find his place in the offense. He also understands there's only one ball and a lot of mouths to feed.

But when the opportunity does present itself, he's got to be ready to take it. When asked if he would suit up in Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens, Smith-Schuster said, "You never know."

The next two weeks are all about getting up to speed in Reid's scheme.

Once he does that, he can worry about finding his way among the embarrassment of riches in the Chiefs offense.
