New England Patriots Legend Sheds Light on QB Competition

The New England Patriots have one big question looming as the season rapidly approaches, and it's a question that will likely get answered very soon.

Rookie quarterback Drake Maye has made the decision at least somewhat difficult for his coaches after surging late through training camp and the preseason. Head coach Jerod Mayo seems to have made some statements that contradict each other, calling Maye the second best quarterback on the roster while simultaneously saying he has outperformed the veteran Jacoby Brissett .

While fans and media seem to be confused by the double talk from the head coach, it made complete sense to one Patriots legend. Former New England running back and Super Bowl hero James White on his 'The Money Down' podcast said that just because Maye has outperformed Brissett does not mean he is the best option to begin the year.

"Mayo said…Drake Maye is outperforming Jacoby Brissett, but he’s still the second best quarterback…people were like, ‘That doesn’t make sense’ — it makes perfect sense. When there’s a competition…not the best player could win the competition. That’s just the nature of sports," White said . "It don’t matter how talented you are, how good you are. Whoever shows up during that competition could go out there and win it. I think [Mayo] is just saying Jacoby’s the best guy for our team as of right now. Can that change? Yes, of course…if it’s week two, week three, week four, and he just looking that good during practice…and the offense ain’t really doing much, why not? Throw the guy out there and see if he can make some stuff happen."

Signs seem to be pointing to Brissett beginning the year as the starter, so when or if Maye takes over this season will be the main story around the team until it happens.
