With the end of the preseason, the San Francisco 49ers have finalized their 53-man roster, but General Manager John Lynch isn’t hitting the brakes just yet. The 49ers are now focused on fortifying their practice squad, adding key players to ensure depth and versatility throughout the season. As we've seen with Brock Purdy 's unexpected rise, having a deep roster can make all the difference, and the 49ers are leaving no stone unturned.

The practice squad is starting to solidify, and while this roster will likely see changes as the season progresses, the current lineup is already making waves. Here’s a closer look at the newest members of the 49ers' practice squad:

    • EDGE Jonathan Garvin: Garvin, a former seventh-round pick by the Green Bay Packers, brings a solid track record to the 49ers. Over the last three seasons, the Miami alum has accumulated 32 tackles and 1.5 sacks. His experience and potential make him a valuable addition to San Francisco’s defensive line depth.
    • SAF Tracy Walker: Walker , who has spent parts of the last six seasons with the Detroit Lions, adds significant experience to the secondary. With four sacks and three interceptions under his belt, Walker was signed with hopes of elevating his role to the Week 1 roster, contributing both as a starter and a key reserve.
    • WR Tay Martin: Martin, a familiar face on the 49ers' practice squad, is back for his third consecutive season. Despite not yet securing a permanent spot on the roster, his familiarity with the team and consistent presence demonstrate Coach Kyle Shanahan’s trust and investment in his potential.

What Are the NFL Practice Squad Rules and Regulations?

NFL practice squads are limited to 16 players, including one international pathway player. Teams can retain up to six veterans on their practice squad, with two being vested veterans who have at least two seasons of NFL experience. Throughout the regular season, practice squad players can be signed to active rosters of other teams, but each team can also elevate up to two players from their practice squad to the active roster. Notably, practice squad players can be elevated a maximum of three times before they must be added to the active roster.

As the 49ers work to build a robust team, keeping a close eye on their practice squad developments will be crucial. The team's strategic moves now could prove essential as the season unfolds.
