Bucs Sign Ex Tulane QB to Practice Squad

The quarterback room of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a murky outlook a year ago. Fortunately, the 2023 season brought clarity to that picture moving into the near future with Baker Mayfield now the solid starter.

Heading into the preseason, there was a light debate about the backup job behind Mayfield. Kyle Trask solidified that spot over John Wolford in the preseason to earn that tole.

The Bucs decided to keep two quarterbacks on their final roster, but have gone a different direction to add some insurance.

Tampa Bay signed rookie Michael Pratt to its practice squad Wednesday , positioning him as the essential "third" quarterback around the team.

With the move, it likely spells the end of Wolford's tenure with the franchise after one season. Tampa Bay cut Wolford at this point in 2023 and resigned him to the practice squad shortly after. This time the Bucs opted for a change of direction.

Pratt, a seventh-round pick out of Tulane, spent his preseason with the Green Bay Packers. He appeared in all three of the team's games, completing 23 of 35 passes for 178 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The new Bucs quarterback had a successful college career with the Green Wave, winning the American Athletic Conference's 2023 Offensive Player of the Year Award.
