The Los Angeles Chargers have made significant roster changes as they trim down their team ahead of the upcoming season.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh has released three former Michigan players on cutdown day, marking a notable shift in the team's lineup.

Wide receiver Cornelius Johnson, selected 253rd overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, was among those let go.

During his time at Michigan, he earned recognition as an All-Big Ten honorable mention, finishing his final season with 47 receptions for 604 yards and one touchdown.

Over five years, he accumulated 138 receptions for 2,038 yards and 14 touchdowns, along with rushing for 70 yards on six attempts.

Offensive lineman Karsen Barnhart, who started 31 games at Michigan, was also released. Harbaugh had previously praised Barnhart for his dedication and team-first mentality.

"He’s a trusted agent and known friend," Harbaugh said. "Selfless player. Does everything for the team. He’s always locked in and pulling his weight. I mean, you go back, it’s no surprise. He is who he is."

Although he was signed as an undrafted free agent, there’s a possibility he could land on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Defensive lineman Christopher Hinton, who played at Michigan from 2019 to 2021, was the third former Wolverine cut from the roster.

Hinton had a solid college career, appearing in 32 games and recording 56 tackles, two sacks, and several other defensive stats.

After declaring for the NFL Draft following his junior year, he signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent but was later waived. He had brief stints with the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons before joining the Chargers, where he made his NFL debut in December 2022.

Despite the release of these three players, linebacker Junior Colson remains on the Chargers' roster. Colson was recognized as a freshman All-American in 2021 and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2022 and 2023.

As the Chargers move forward, the focus will be on building a competitive team for the upcoming season while navigating the challenges of roster adjustments.
