Following this year’s NFL Draft, the Washington Commanders signed former Wake Forest and Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman as a priority free agent.

Hartman was impressing in camp until a shoulder injury slowed his progress before the Commanders second preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. The former Fighting Irish quarterback was already fighting an uphill battle to make the team to begin with, but the injury presumably ended those chances.

NFL Insider Tom Pelissero posted on his official X account, however, that the Commanders are giving the QB a job.

“The Commanders are signing QB Sam Hartman to the practice squad, per source,” Pelissero wrote.

Hartman will now have the opportunity to help run the practice-squad stuff and learn the Commanders offense in the process. If it doesn’t work out in Washington, however, Hartman could join the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL in the spring.

The Stallions, coached by Skip Holtz, selected Hartman with the final pick of the 10th round of the UFL Draft. The Stallions are also the UFL champions from a season ago, going 8-2 before running roughshod through the playoffs on their way to the title.

For now, however, Hartman will be a part in helping this Commanders franchise prepare every week for their opponents.
