Chiefs Sign Former Broncos Running Back

The reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are not finished adding to their offense, as they signed veteran running back Samaje Perine to their active roster Wednesday.

Just a day after he was released by division rival Denver Broncos, Perine will join the Chiefs looking to bolster a running back group led by Isiah Pacheco.

In his sole season for Denver last year, Perine finished with just 231 rushing yards, but 432 receiving yards, which was third on the team. He will now bring his receiving abilities to a Chiefs offense that can use them after Jerick McKinnon's departure in the offseason.

With just over a week until the Chiefs open their season against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1, it's unclear how much of an impact Perine will have as he acclimates with the team's offense. However, since the team signed him to the active roster rather than the practice squad, it's clear that they see him as a potential impact player for the offense as the season continues.

Perine will likely have to compete with running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire for snaps early on in the season. Entering his ninth season in the NFL, Perine will be joining his fifth team since joining the league in 2017. Despite being a running back, he has always excelled as a receiver out of the backfield.

Fans may get to see Perine take the field for the first time when the Chiefs face the Ravens in Kansas City on Sept. 4.
