Chargers Bolster Roster with Trade for Former Playoff QB from Falcons

Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers are looking to bolster their roster going into the 2024 NFL season, particularly at the quarterback position.

Although they have one of the best QBs in the league under center as the starter in former Oregon Ducks star Justin Herbert, behind him the depth didn't inspire much confidence, with only Easton Stick listed on the roster.

However, they changed that on Wednesday, completing a very intriguing trade with the Atlanta Falcons a day after roster cuts were made final ahead of the start of the regular season in a week's time. The Chargers acquired Taylor Heinicke from the Falcons.

While Heinicke was most recently in Atlanta, he is better known for his time with the Washington Commanders, where he played in a playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back in 2020. Though Heinicke lost the game, he dazzled against Tom Brady, throwing for over 300 yards and a touchdown.

This trade makes sense for both teams in 2024, with the Falcons going forward feeling comfortable about where they are with both Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr. Meanwhile, the Chargers need QB talent, especially with Herbert dealing with a minor foot injury already this preseason.

Heinicke saw extended action this preseason with mixed results, going 20-of-44 for 206 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions.
