Tom Brady Will Face Serious TV Restrictions If Approved As Las Vegas Raiders Part Owner

Tom Brady can't stay away from the NFL. His first retirement back in 2022 lasted just 40 days. And while it seems his second retirement (as a player) is permanent, he has his heart set on returning to the NFL again on two fronts.

Brady inked a 10-year, $375 million contract to become Fox's lead color commentator. This is the most lucrative broadcasting deal in TV history, as Brady is set to work alongside play-by-play announcer, Kevin Burkhardt, for Fox's feature game each week.

Brady's second potential NFL venture is to become part owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. In a 2023 interview, Brady said becoming a part-time NFL owner would be a "dream come true". That "dream", would make being an NFL commentator a "nightmare", if approved by at least 24 of the 32 NFL owners.

On Tuesday, NFL owners gathered in Minneapolis for NFL meetings. The league presented owners with a slideshow presentation titled "Brady Broadcast Restrictions". According to ESPN Senior Writer, Seth Wickersham, the league outlined an extensive list of unique restrictions Brady will encounter as a broadcaster if approved as an NFL owner:

    - Brady would not be permitted to be in another team's facility, would not be permitted to witness practice and would not be permitted to attend broadcast production meetings, either in person or virtually

    - Brady would be prohibited from publicly criticizing game officials and other clubs. While Brady could, in theory, state that he disagrees with a call on air, he would be subject to fines or even a suspension if he went too far

    - Brady would be subject to the league's anti-tampering policies. He would be permitted only "strictly social communication with members of other clubs," according to the slide that the league presented

    - And, Brady would be subject to the league's gambling policy

These serious restrictions would make fulfilling his TV responsibilities extremely difficult. Brady would be the only member on Fox's broadcasting crew subject to these restrictions, putting him a unique situation. Current NFL owners have already questioned the discounted sale price of the proposed 10% stake in the Raiders, as reported by The Washington Post this past March. Adding these heavy restrictions could further complicate Brady's "dream" from coming true.
