New England Patriots Officially Name Week 1 Starting Quarterback

The New England Patriots decided on their Week 1 starting quarterback following the preseason battle between rookie Drake Maye and veteran Jacoby Brissett.

According to a Tweet from Adam Schefter Thursday morning, head coach Jerod Mayo has made the following choice for the opening game starter:

"Patriots HC Jerod Mayo just informed his team that Jacoby Brissett will be New England’s Week 1 starting quarterback vs. the Bengals, per @Jfowlerespn and me," Schefter wrote.

"The favorite to start in the battle with rookie QB Drake Maye now gets the Week 1 nod. But Maye’s time is coming."

Maye is on the much younger side of rookie quarterbacks, so the decision isn't a massive stunner. Plus, Brissett is a savvy vet who's started games for the Patriots before, and also with the Colts, Browns and Dolphins.

You'd be hard-pressed to find many quarterbacks who has started games for four different teams. Jacoby Brissett actually started his very first game as a Patriot, stepping up in an emergency circumstance back in 2016 to fill in for an injured Jimmy Garoppolo, who was already filling in for a suspended Tom Brady.

However, in the shot he got, Brissett flashed upside and immediately flipped his Patriots' demo into a starting spot with the Colts in just his second season. After starting in Indy for two of four seasons thanks to the Andrew Luck injury and retirement situation, he again moved on.

This time, Brissett landed in Miami, spent one season there, and then did a year in Cleveland and another year in Washington. Now, the circle is complete as Brissett gets to start this season the same place he started his whole pro career.
