The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the San Diego Padres 4-3 at Busch Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Here is what you need to know from Wednesday's contest

    Pallante was Brilliant

One of the youngest pitchers on the Cardinals active roster has been the best arm over the last stretch for the team. It was no different on Wednesday. Andre Pallante got the team out of its two game slide against the Padres with a brilliant start in game three. Pallante went 5.2 innings and allowed only two runs on eight hits. He struck out three in the outing.

Now the season is hanging on by a thread, keeping Pallante in the rotation seems more reasonable than ever. He's pitching better than everyone on the roster, and the control he has left with the organization makes sense to see what exactly he has for this team moving forward. He is showing 'top of the rotation' level stuff lately and could be a huge piece for the team moving into 2025 and beyond.

    Arenado Does it Again

For the second time in a week, Nolan Arenado clinches the win for the struggling Cardinals. On Wednesday, Arenado brought it Masyn Winn in the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk off single to take the third game of the series against the Padres.

It was the first walk off for Arenado since he hit a walk-off grand slam just a week ago to defeat the NL Central leading Milwaukee Brewers.

Winn Continues to Set the Tone

The jump that Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn has made this season continues to be incredible. From questioning his performance at the plate, heading into the year, to becoming the solidified lead off guy for the foreseeable future is quite the accomplishment.

The best part? He's doing it at an elite level.

Winn continues to set the tone for the Cardinals in the leadoff spot, He went 2 for 4 on Wednesday with a walk. Getting on base three times in the outing for the rest of the lineup to be able to utilize his speed on the base paths is a dangerous situation for the Cardinals opponent. It came into play late Wednesday as Winn scored the game winning run off the Arenado RBI single.

    What's Next

The Cardinals will finish the four game series with the Padres as they try and split the series in the finale on Thursday. The first pitch at Busch Stadium is scheduled for 2:15 PM EST.
