Former Five-Star Oregon Quarterback Beat Out At New School For Starting Role

    By Kevin Borba,

After committing to Oregon as the highest-rated passer in program history, Ty Thompson found himself sitting behind two transfer quarterbacks in Eugene.

It started with Boston College transfer Anthony Brown and happened again following Brown's departure, as Auburn's Bo Nix transferred in and started the past two years. While the hope was that Thompson would sit behind the veterans and eventually take over, that didn't seem to be in the cards.

The Ducks went out and landed Oklahoma transfer Dillon Gabriel, and also brought in former five-star Dante Moore from UCLA.

So, this past offseason, he transferred to Tulane to play for new head coach Jon Sumrall. Just about everyone in the country thought this would finally be the time that he gets the starting nod, but according to 247Sports ' Matt Zenitz, Sumrall went in a different direction.

Zenitz reported that the Green Wave will start redshirt freshman Darian Mensah against Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday for their Week 1 game. While Thompson and Michael Pratt's backup from last year, Kai Horton, didn't win the job, Zenitz does expect them to play as well.

While the season is far from over, with this being the first game of the year for the Green Wave, this certainly has to take the wind out of Thompson's sails. Losing yet another quarterback battle after being a historic recruit at Oregon is not what anyone expected once he announced his decision.

As a recruit, On3 ranked Thompson as the No. 31 player in the country, the No. 6 quarterback and the No. 1 player in the state of Arizona.

According to ESPN , Tulane is favored by 27 points, and has a 90.4% chance of winning, so realistically, Thompson should have a chance to show what he can do in a game setting.
