The San Francisco 49ers are optimistic about their recent draft class, despite some setbacks. Out of the selections made in 2022 and 2023, six players are no longer with the team, and one from this year's draft has already been claimed by another team. The 49ers were particularly disappointed to lose offensive lineman Jarrett Kingston, who they hoped to add to their practice squad.

"We ran out of numbers," general manager John Lynch told reporters as quoted by 49ers Webzone. "You play the waiting game and think maybe we can sneak them through. It didn't work. So those ones hurt."

However, the team remains hopeful about the seven players from the 2024 draft class. They believe they made solid picks and are eager to see how these players develop over time. One standout is Dominick Puni, who has impressed during training camp and could secure a starting position on the offensive line due to injuries affecting other players.

"We thought we really hit on this draft class, and that remains to be [seen]," Lynch said. "I always tell people, 'Ask me a couple years down the line.' [WR] Ricky's [Pearsall] going to be a really good football player. He's had some health challenges. Ricky's a good player.

While the team hasn't officially named Puni as the starting right guard, indications suggest he is the frontrunner for the role. His performance has exceeded expectations, and he has quickly adapted to the team's style of play.

"It's going to be hard to take that from him," Shanahan said on Wednesday. "That's how he's been playing. That's how we've had the lineup in. We've got two practices before we go into next week and really solidify everything, but it would be hard to take that from him in these two practices

Another promising player is Malik Mustapha, a safety who is making a strong impression. His speed and physicality on the field have caught the attention of both coaches and fans alike. While he still has room for improvement, his early contributions suggest he will be a valuable asset to the team.

"He's going to make an impact on this team," Lynch declared. "I think we can all see that. He plays fast, he plays physical. He's a Niner, and we're really excited about what's to come. And he's got a long way to go. Malik knows that. But he's a worker."

Overall, the 49ers are excited about their draft class and the potential these young players bring to the roster. If their early performances are any indication, this group could make a significant impact in the upcoming season.
