Dak: Jerry Jones Comments Don't 'Really Hold Weight With Me!'

FRISCO - What Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said about Jerry Jones on Thursday is being interpreted by many as some sort of a shot at his boss.

We don't see it that way at all. Rather, there is great wisdom in Dak's quote, if we read between its lines.

Prescott is of course entering the final year of his contract, and the Cowboys are continuing - however slowly negotiating an extension they at one time hoped to have done before the start of the season, thus preventing the MVP QB from eventually becoming a March 2025 free agent, at which time it seems likely that teams will bid $60 million APY or more for his services.

Along this path, Prescott and his agent, Todd France, have had plenty of conversations with Jerry and Stephen Jones. The Joneses have characterized some of those talks as "positive,'' as has Dak.

But those are the private talks. What about Jerry's public takes on the situation, when he often speaks "Jerry'ese,'' and pulls out that ol' "Arkansas Door-to-Door Insurance Salesman Chicken-Fried Jibber-Jabber'' delivery?

About those, the quarterback just made it clear, he does not harbor concern. At all.

“I stopped, honestly, listening to things he says to the media a long time ago,'' Prescott said. "It doesn’t really hold weight with me.''

Is that a shot? Not as much as it's a fact.

The remark from Prescott comes a day after Jones talked about what he has to "see" from his quarterback amid the talks, a speech that was intended as a compliment to the QB but can be taken any which-way.

You could easily say, 'If you haven’t seen it by now, you haven’t seen it," Jones said . "(But) I’m such a fan of Dak. And I appreciate all of the great things that we all know are there. And I appreciate his work ethic probably more than anything. I can’t tell you how proud I am that we’ve got him this year to start this campaign. ... Dak’s (contractual) situation right now for me, has more to do with our situation than it does with the merits of Dak Prescott being the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.”

Again, that was supposed to be about Dak's positive "merit.'' But by the time Jerry got done "geein' and a-hawin','' it's hard for the layman to know what the heck he was trying to say.

So Dak, wisely, "a long time ago,'' gave up trying.
