Bucs WR Depth Revealed by Practice Squad Roster
By Anthony Goss,
Amid roster cuts at the beginning of this week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had to shave off several areas of depth across what was a 90-man group. Given what the team showed during the preseason, the wide receiver was one of the positions by those required subtractions.
Tampa Bay certainly chose well in its selection of five receivers. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin had their spots locked, Trey Palmer has familiarity in this room and the young guys showed well between the efforts of Jalen McMillan and Kameron Johnson.
But these decisions sacrificed the placement of other receivers who performed or possess the potential to make an impact. Thursday, they brought back three such players onto the practice squad.
Sterling Shepard, Cody Thompson and Ryan Miller alll earned spots on Tampa Bay's practice squad, the team announced .
Shepard's presence is the most notable, given his track of NFL experience and past connection with Baker Mayfield from the University of Oklahoma football team. Unfortunately, an injury prevented him from getting a full go at training camp and in the preseason.
But Thompson and Miller both demonstrated their value in the preseason with one of the two leading the team in receiving yards each of the Bucs' three games.
Thompson had the most impressive numbers, tallying five receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars, following that with seven catches for 45 yards in the team's finale versus the Miami Dolphins.
Miller led the way in the preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals with three receptions for 42 yards.
How will this impact the Bucs? There is no immediate result of practice squad signings, but if a call up is needed, they have players that either bring starting NFL experience or have shown they can contribute in Liam Coen's offense.
