NFL Agents: Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes Underpaid

    By Colin Miller,

Entering his eighth season in the NFL, it's hard to find an expert that believes there's a better player in the league than Kansas City Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes. However, despite the praise and accolades, Mahomes is currently the 12th-highest paid player in the NFL based on average annual value, or AAV.

While he may technically have the highest-valued contract in NFL history, he's only making $45 million per-season, which puts him behind other starting quarterbacks such as Trevor Lawrence and Tua Tagovailoa.

In a recent survey released by The Athletic, 31 anonymous NFL agents were questioned about a variety of topics around the league, including quarterback contracts. In the survey, multiple agents spoke about Mahomes' current contract and how they believe he deserves much more.

“$100 million per year guaranteed over five years. That’s probably low," said an agent. "Mahomes is the ultimate difference-maker. Eighteen teams would pay that now.”

Another agent compared Mahomes to baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani.

"Dak has a shot at $60 million, so Mahomes would get at least $70 million AAV," said that agent. "Another 10-year contract with open bidding might get him close to a billion overall. He’d be the NFL’s Shohei Ohtani. One of one."

While it's obviously unclear who was actually making these statements, it is clear that the agents who are in charge of actually negotiating contracts for players believe that Mahomes deserves to be paid more than he currently is.

It's likely only a matter of time before Mahomes does get another big payday that sets a new precedent for the NFL. The real question is: When will that payday come?
