The New England Patriots made league wide headlines on Thursday when head coach Jerod Mayo announced, to the surprise of few, that veteran Jacoby Brissett would be the team's starting quarterback .

It was a decision that seemed inevitable at the start of camp, but one that certainly got a little bit murkier over the final few weeks as rookie No. 3 overall selection Drake Maye started to take leaps with his development.

Though it obviously is not the outcome Maye wanted out of the gate, the young rookie is always looking at the bigger picture. Maye spoke to reporters after his head coach made the announcement and talked about why he understood the decision.

"There’s two ways to look at it," Maye said . "Obviously I want to play, the competitive edge in me. At the same time, I understand the situation. Jacoby has been in the offense and got reps with the 1s all camp…I feel like I left it all out there. No regrets coming back."

Asked if he was disappointed with the decision, Maye said that isn't the right way to put it.

"I wouldn’t say disappointed. Obviously, I want to play. But, at the same time, I understand the situation...I came into this camp working and studying to be the starter, and that’s not going to change,” he said.

For such a young player, it seems like Maye has an excellent head on his shoulders. Of course he wants to play, but the opportunity to sit and learn for a little bit longer will give him the chance to get his career started on the right foot.
