Ex Steelers QB John Rhys Plumlee Signs with Jaguars

The Pittsburgh Steelers added former UCF quarterback John Rhys Plumlee back in April after the NFL Draft after he went unclaimed during the three-day selection process.

After acquiring Russell Wilson in a weird "free agency" twist and trading for former first-round pick Justin Fields from Chicago, Steelers general manager Omar Khan inked the former Ole Miss and UCF signal caller to a deal to add some depth to the quarterback room.

Plumlee was also selected by the UFL's Arlington Renegades with the No. 3 overall pick of the entry draft back in July.

But after being released by the Steelers, the Renegades might have to wait, as the  Jacksonville Jaguars have signed him to their practice squad.

But Plumlee isn't assured a roster spot while sitting on the practice squad in Jacksonville. But in Arlington, he won't just be assured a roster spot in the UFL, he'll certainly be a starter.

The Renegades have struggled with the quarterback spot since they were formed in 2020 with the second incarnation of the XFL. They finally settled on Luis Perez and won the XFL Championship in 2023. Perez is gone, and they're looking for their next passer.

As a senior at UCF last season, Plumlee passed for 2,834 yards with a 64.3 completion percentage with 33 touchdowns and three interceptions to go along with 1,444 rushing yards on 162 carries and another 19 touchdowns on the ground.

It sounds like while Plumlee won't be coming back to Pittsburgh, he might still have a choice to make between sunny Jacksonville on an NFL practice squad, and starting the the North Texas town of Arlington and being a neighbor to the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers.
