As MLB rosters expand for September, the Detroit Tigers are set to promote Justyn-Henry Malloy, a 24-year-old designated hitter, as one of their key call-up candidates. Malloy made his major league debut in early June and has since recorded a batting average of .217, with eight home runs, 21 walks, and 74 strikeouts over 57 games.
"There's always moves on the horizon," manager A.J. Hinch said before Friday's 7-5 loss . "It's just a matter of when and what and where. But nothing to comment on."
The Tigers will increase their active roster from 26 to 28 players for their upcoming game against the Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park. Alongside Malloy, the team is expected to add another pitcher, although specific names have yet to be confirmed.
Recently, the Tigers made several roster adjustments, including the return of right-hander Casey Mize from the injured list and the designation of left-handed reliever Joey Wentz for assignment. Additionally, right-handed reliever Alex Faedo has been moved to the 60-day injured list due to a shoulder strain, effectively ending his season.
With these changes, the Tigers currently have 39 players on their 40-man roster. The team is not planning any immediate moves for the open spot, which may serve as flexibility for future roster adjustments.
On the pitching side, Ricky Vanasco stands out as the only healthy option from the 40-man roster. He has performed well in Triple-A Toledo, boasting a 1.38 ERA with 15 strikeouts over 13 innings since joining the team. The Tigers recently sent down left-handed reliever Bryan Sammons and right-handed reliever Mason Englert, making them ineligible for recall for the next 10 days.
While the Tigers have several position players eligible for call-up, Malloy is the primary candidate. He has shown patience at the plate with a 10.3% walk rate but has struggled with contact, reflected in his high strikeout rate. After spending time in Triple-A Toledo, where he played left field in seven of ten games, Malloy is now eligible to return to the big leagues.
As for Jackson Jobe, the highly regarded pitching prospect, he will not be joining the Tigers this month. Despite being the top pitching prospect in baseball, Jobe's recent performance in Double-A Erie has not met expectations, as he continues to work on his command and overall game.
