The Atlanta Braves have made a trade.

And yes, it is after the MLB Trade Deadline. The move however, technically involves a minor leaguer.

On Saturday, it was reported by Francys Romero that the Atlanta Braves have traded Yuli Gurriel to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for cash considerations. The Royals are looking to add depth to their roster as they look to make their first postseason appearance since winning the World Series in 2015. Kansas City recently lost Vinnie Pasquantino for 6-8 weeks due to a broken right thumb and could use an extra bat at first base.

Yuli Gurriel signed a minor league deal with the Braves this past April and although he has MLB experience, did not get a promotion to Atlanta this season. Gurriel stayed in Triple-A Gwinnett since the signing and has performed well in his time with the Stripers: In 75 games this season he hit .292/.378/.485 with 12 home runs and 48 RBI. He was also 11 for 12 on successful stolen base attempts.

Gurriel will look to make it on the Royals active roster and make his way back to the Major Leagues for the first time since the 2023 season where he played 108 games for the Miami Marlins. Gurriel played seven seasons in the big leagues with the Houston Astros and won a Golden Glove Award during the 2021 season. He has 909 games at the Major League Level.

Gurriel was a potential replacement on the Atlanta Braves roster this past month when Austin Riley went down with injury, but the recent signing of Gio Urshela has turned out to be succesful for the squad.

The Braves will add two more players to their active roster on Sunday as the limit increases to 28 players for the month of September.
