Michigan Makes Final Decision on Starting Quarterback for Season Opener

    By J.C. Shelton,

The Michigan Wolverines will start a new face at quarterback for the 2024 season opener against Fresno State on Saturday night.

In an unexpected move, former walk-on Davis Warren will start over presumed starter Alex Orji, seemingly ending the battle between the two out of fall camp. Warren, a senior, signed with the Wolverines with zero stars to his name in the class of 2020.

The Los Angeles, California native has appeared in eight games as a Wolverine, including three games last season. In his career, Warren has completed 5-of-14 passes for 89 yards and an interception while adding 26 yards on five carries as rusher.

Warren will be tasked with ushering in the new era for the defending national champions. Jim Harbaugh and JJ McCarthy are now in the NFL, leaving former offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore to lead the Wolverines with Warren holding the keys, at least for now.

There's bound to be some experimenting with the position considering the starter wasn't named until just before kickoff of the season opener. Warren may start but you can expect Oriji to get some snaps as well.

Kickoff from Michigan Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
