Reese Olson is taking significant strides toward his return to the Detroit Tigers after recovering from a right shoulder strain.

The 25-year-old right-hander, who last pitched for the team on July 20, recently participated in a live batting practice session at Comerica Park, throwing 20 pitches against teammates Wenceel Pérez, Ryan Kreidler, and Dillon Dingler.

Following the session, Olson expressed satisfaction with how he felt on the mound. He emphasized the importance of this initial step as he prepares for game action.

"Felt pretty normal," Olson said .

"When you're coming back," Olson continued , "you got to get the first mound action before you get game action. It's just kind of the first step."

If all goes well in the coming days, Olson could be set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo, potentially leading to at least two Major League starts later in September.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch indicated that Olson's progress is encouraging, but the team is cautious about his health. They plan to monitor his condition closely before making any decisions about his next steps.

"The next 24 hours, always key," manager A.J. Hinch said of Olson's status . "It was another test that it looks like he passed, as of right afterwards. It's encouraging to see for both him and Wenceel."

Pérez, who also participated in the batting practice, is working his way back from a left oblique strain.

He focused on his left-handed swing during the session, as his right-handed swing is still in recovery. After facing Olson, Pérez was able to run the bases without issues, but he still needs to demonstrate his throwing ability from various angles in the outfield.

Olson has shown promise this season, posting a 3.23 ERA with 31 walks and 92 strikeouts over 103 innings in 19 starts. He utilized all five of his pitches during the live batting practice, although he noted some adjustments needed for his slider.

As Olson continues his recovery, the Tigers remain hopeful for his return to the mound, aiming to strengthen their pitching lineup as the season progresses.
