Jimbo Fisher Was The Talk Of College Football On Saturday

Texas A&M played in their first game under head coach Mike Elko, having to face a talented Notre Dame roster in Week 1.

The No. 7 Fighting Irish defeated the Aggies 23-13 in Elko's debut, despite TAMU having a firm position at No. 20 in the rankings and the 12th man to back them up at home.

The Aggies dealt with a difficult situation on fourth and two with just over 1:30 remaining in the game. Quarterback Conner Weigman and company were down 20-13, attempting to drive down the field to tie the game.

Elko and his staff decided to attempt a pass on fourth and two and eventually turned the ball over on downs.

College football fans were furious with the play calling and lack of offensive production from the Aggies.

Following the loss, former Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher was trending on social media.

Some fans were saying that Fisher could have defeated the Irish, while others were sending out apologies to the longtime coach for previously calling him the problem in College Station.

"My hot take: Jimbo fisher would’ve won that A&M game," said one fan.

"Turns out Jimbo Fisher wasn’t the problem with the Aggies offense," commented one fan.

"I hear that Jimbo Fisher is available…." said another fan.

"Jimbo Fisher made money tonight," mentioned one fan.

"Texas AtM needs to fire Jimbo Fisher again." said one fan.

"Man, Jimbo Fisher could have done this, couldn't he?" said another fan.

Jimbo Fisher was the head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies from 2018-23. He made the move to College Station after leading a winning program in the Florida State Seminoles from 2010-17.

Fisher was one of the highest-paid coaches in the history of the sport when he put pen to paper with the Aggies. He signed a 10-year, $75 million contract with Texas A&M in 2017.

The National title-winning head coach was then extended in 2021, putting him in a position to stay with the Aggies till 2031 for a bump to $95 million of total compensation, which was fully guaranteed.

After a couple of poor seasons under Fisher, he was bought out by Texas A&M for a whopping $77.6 million in 2023.

The Aggies then agreed to a deal with Mike Elko. The former Duke Blue Devils head coach signed a six-year contract with an annual base salary of $7 million starting in 2024.

The Aggies haven't cracked a double-digit win season since 2012. During the Fisher era, they were consistently flying around a seven to eight-win margin, despite having some of the best recruiting classes in the country.

Fisher left those high-level recruits in Texas A&M, including young stars like Shemar Stewart and Chase Bisontis, so Elko was in a good position to succeed.

There's clear talent on the roster, but Elko wasn't able to connect the dots in Week 1.

He'll have a chance to pick up the first win of the "Mike Elko era" in Week 2 when the Texas A&M Aggies take on McNeese State at 12:45 p.m. ET.
