The New York Yankees couldn’t erase a five-run deficit in their 6-5 loss to their St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.

Here’s how the Yankees played in Saturday’s loss:

    1. Will Warren allows four runs in up and down start.

The Yankees were the first team to find the scoreboard on Saturday after Anthony Volpe hit an RBI single in the second inning. The Cardinals proceeded to respond in a big way. Warren held the Cardinals hitless through the first two frames but fell into trouble in the third. Victor Scott II led off the inning with a walk and Alec Burleson hit a single two batters later. Nolan Arenado then drove in the first run of the inning with a single. Brendan Donovan cleared the bases by hitting a three-run homer into the right field porch of Yankee Stadium. The Cardinals would record five hits in the inning, and the Yankees would only get off the field after Paul Goldschmidt was thrown out at home plate after an Iván Herrera single. Warren would go on to record a 1-2-3 fourth inning but that would be the end of his afternoon.

    2. The Bronx Bombers had a late surge in the eighth.

The Yankees entered the eighth inning trailing 6-1. Gleyber Torres led off the inning with a single, but Juan Soto then grounded into a double play. Aaron Judge started the two-out rally with a single. He was followed by three more Yankees singles before Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run double. The Bronx Bombers suddenly trailed by one run with the tying run in scoring position. Alex Verdugo grounded out to end the inning but the momentum had shifted in favor of the home team.

    3. The Yankees failed to make it all the way back in the ninth.

The first two Yankees to hit in the ninth inning were retired, but a Juan Soto double gave the team some more late life. Aaron Judge was intentionally walked, putting the tying run in scoring position yet again, and the winning run on the base paths. Austin Wells then came to bat, looking for his third hit of the game. He struck out on a 3-2 count to end the game as Ryan Helsley picked up his league-leading 42nd save and the Cardinals took Game 2 of the series.
